When Blinds Hut got in touch to ask if I’d like to contribute to their Summer trends campaign, I knew immediately what I’d be writing about. One of the highlights among the Summer 2017 interior trends for me has undoubtedly been the return of rattan. Rattan furniture – it’s back from the 70s and it’s better than ever!
Ok, so it never really went away in all honesty, but lately it’s been really hogging the limelight as far as interiors are concerned. And it’s not just here for the summer either! Nope, rattan will be sticking around well into autumn and winter months too. Wahoo!
It works so effortlessly alongside the resurgence of indoor plants, botanical theme and greenery. If you’re looking for something modern, casual and cool, but still inherently sophisticated – it’s rattan that you need in my opinion.
Let me show you what I’m talking about…
Rattan furniture

Ikea, Rattan armchair with cushion – £195
BOOM! Talk about killing two birds with one stone – rattan and velvet. A match made in heaven that I never would have thought of if it wasn’t for Ikea. They’ve brought together two super hot trends and I think it works beautifully. This chair is incredibly versatile and could sit nicely in so many different rooms of your house.

Amara, Frida rattan side table – £134
I love the design of this table and I think it would look great in a living room or as a bedside table. When you’re styling side tables remember the rule of three (or at least go for odd numbers) to make your accessories look most appealing.

La redoute, Tio rattan headboard – £279
This pretty peacock headboard is such a show stopper, what a vibrant addition it would make to any bedroom! It’s available in a natural colourway too, but I’m just in love with this stunning blue colour.
Rattan accessories
If you’re not quite ready to splash the cash on rattan furniture, accessories are a great affordable way to introduce rattan into your space. I’ve handpicked my favourite pieces for you to check out.

Laura Ashley Basket Art – from £25
If you think that rattan is more suited to Scandinavian interior styles, Laura Ashley will prove you wrong. I’ve loved this rattan basket art ever since I clapped eyes on it at the Ideal Home show earlier in the year. I think it complements their classic furniture style just perfectly. It’s on sale at the moment too, so be quick!

Cuckcookand, Large Rattan Ceiling light – £139.95
Great lighting can make or break a room, so it’s important to get the ambience just right. I think this rattan ceiling light would create an amazing focal point. In fact I love more or less everything in this photo, I just want to climb into it, lounge on the sofa with my feet on the leather pouffe and browse through a copy of Living etc please.
If you need some tips on choosing the perfect light for you room, take a look at this post.

Harvey Norman, Rattan baskets set of 2 – £45
If there’s one thing I love its storage, especially when it looks this good! These baskets are perfect for corralling your clutter then simply pop a pretty throw blanket on top and nobody will ever know what’s lurking in there. If you like that tip, there’s plenty more in my post about how to clean and tidy your house in a hurry.
Rattan on a budget
If you’re looking for affordable rattan furniture, head to your local charity shop or hit up Ebay. There are some incredible vintage pieces, for very reasonable prices. If you’re a fan of upcycling, you could always add some paint to create a fun colourful look.
What to style rattan with…
- Monochrome for an uber modern look
- Tan leather furniture
- Brass accessories
- Sheepskin rugs (perfect to drape over chairs)
- Succulents and house plants galore
- Macrame and wall hangings
What do you think about rattan furniture and accessories? Do you have any in your home?

July 27, 2017 at 12:09 pmLove rattan for a homely, cosy look. The best thing about rattan like you say is that it can be dressed up for a more sophisticated theme – rattan and velvet …nice! Or dressed down for a more laid back casual look. Love the pictures too!

July 28, 2017 at 9:33 amI agree with you, love everything in that Cuckooland shot! The sofa, the ceiling light, the side tables… I went to IKEA a few weeks ago and there were dozens of people (almost fighting) trying to get this new rattan cabinet. Anyway, sold out in 10 minutes!

August 9, 2017 at 9:55 pmOMG! This large ceiling light is just amazing! And that headboard! Actually everything in here is amazing because I just love rattan furniture! And they go with every style, my house used to be more shabby chic and now it’s more eclectic I guess and the good thing is I didn’t have to buy new furniture 🙂

August 12, 2017 at 8:18 amIt really goes with everything doesn’t it! I’m desperate to get a rattan peacock chair for our bedroom, when we get around to redecorating that is. I’m think of going to the dark side with a navy wall ? I’m sure you’d approve though!
