DIY Snow scene in jar – Christmas crafts week

Snow scene in a jar - Girl about townhouseSeven days of DIY Christmas decorations, with simple step-by-step tutorials.

Welcome back to day 2 of my week of Christmas crafts <insert your own made up festive theme tune here, or not, totally up to you>!

Good news friends. I’ve finally found a use for all the jars I’ve been saving, just in case I spontaneously decide to make jam. Because let’s be honest, I’m not a spontaneous jam-making kinda gal.

I’ve seen different versions of the snow scene in a jar all over pinterest and just love the simplicity of it. It takes just a few minutes to put together, mainly from things you’ll already have in your cupboards. Seriously, whats not to like?

For today’s Christmas craft you will need:

  • A large jar (hurricane jar, lantern or apothecary jar would work)
  • White sugar or salt
  • Christmas trees
  • Ribbon
  1. Pour enough sugar or salt into the jar to fill it ⅓ of the way up.
  2. Arrange the decorations inside, so it looks like a little alpine village. I tipped the jar to one side to create a mountain effect.
  3. Tie a ribbon around the top.

That’s it, all done.

Instead of just using trees, you could add houses, people, santa, a snowman or anything else that maybe lurking at the bottom of your Christmas decorations box. If you have young children, you might want to consider spray painting the lid and putting that on to avoid sugar all over your carpet!

It looks so pretty on a mantle, coffee table, bookshelf or window sill. You could even make a series of them in different sized jars.

I’ll be back tomorrow for day 3 of Christmas craft week (OMG craftmas?! Is that already a thing or did I just invent it?).

Oh and don’t forget to check out day 1 of craftmas week here.

When do you put your Christmas decorations up? Normally we wait until the first weekend in December.

Let me know in the comments below.

I normally wait for the first week in Dec but we are putting them up a little earlier this year because we are hosting a Christmas dinner for some friends and it wouldn’t seem right not to have decorations up! #brilliantblogpost

We are in the same situation, so for the fist time ever decorations will be going up in November! Thanks for stopping by.

I love mason jars, we do can and pickle veggies from the garden each year, but this year the Chipmunks cleaned us out so we have a bunch of unused jars sitting around! UG! This would be the perfect solution. I love the use of sugar instead of fake snow, we already have that in the pantry. I’ve been trying to limit the amount of sugar in my diet and I could make these jars to stop myself from breaking into it! Win Win! And they are so adorable, small enough that they fit anywhere, adding that Christmas Spirit all over the house!

Oh that’s such a shame that the chipmunks ate your veggies! The snow scene is definitely a great way to use your jars though.
