Have you got a dino obsessed little one? I have the perfect dinosaur craft! A super easy DIY terrarium that requires no watering thank goodness.
A while ago I shared the plans for my son’s dinosaur themed bedroom makeover, which after hitting a few initial road bumps (entire family got stuck in a never-ending cough/cold cycle) is well and truly underway. I really wanted to make some unique dinosaur craft projects to make the room fun. Ages ago I pinned this awesome idea for a Dinosaur terrarium and I knew little J would absolutely love it.
However, the more I thought about the survival rate of succulents in our house, the more I started to go off the idea. I mean, I have more of a black thumb than a green thumb when it comes to house plants. I managed to kill an Aloe Vera plant and that is no easy task, let me tell you! So it was back to the drawing board.
Then whilst I was in the pet shop (getting distracted by how cute the hamsters are) I suddenly had a brain wave. I could use the fake plants intended for aquariums and the stones too. Surely I wouldn’t be able to kill fake plants? I mean, I’m not promising anything – but it’s unlikely, right?
Dinosaur craft: DIY terrarium tutorial
You will need:
- Glass bowl
- Aquarium stones
- Aquarium plants
- Dinosaurs
1# Tip a layer of stone in to the base of the jar and tilt to one side, so the stones are raised slightly.
2# Tip a layer of different coloured stone on top and tilt at a different angle. Continue to layer the stones until the bowl is 2/3 full. Ensure that the top layer is reasonably thick so you can hide the base of the plants easily.
3# Now arrange a selection of aquarium plants in the centre, covering over their roots with the stones. To add height I added one plant that was tall enough to poke out of the top of the bowl.
4# Add in some dinosaurs!
TIP# Make a mini version using a jar!
That’s all there is to this simple dinosaur craft. My son loves it and I’m sure it’s going to look fab when his new room is complete!
If you are worried about using glass I’ve seen a similar plastic version in the Pound shop so you could use this instead.
