Dinosaur themed boy’s bedroom makeover plans!
Since we moved into the townhouse, just over a year ago, I’ve been like an excitable puppy bounding from room to room when it comes to decor. I have so many ideas that I never seem to finish decorating one room before I start the next.
This year, I’m going to try to be much more structured in my approach. Focusing all my energy on one room at a time and ditching the scatter gun approach.
So, where to start? Well, my son has been waiting patiently for his big boy bedroom for the longest time. I think it’s only fair to start with his room as it’s the most in need of a revamp.
The plan for J’s new bedroom is something bright, fresh, bold and modern.

Theme
Little J has been dino obsessed since before he could talk and thanks to him my dinosaur knowledge has reached mastermind specialist subject level. Needless to say he would like a dinosaur themed bedroom, where he can dream happily of his prehistoric buddies.
Colours
Having already purchased some black out curtains in a dusky blue colour (not too dissimilar to Dulux colour of the year denim drift) I knew that this would be part of the colour palette. Predictably, blue is J’s favourite colour, so I wanted the core colour scheme to centre around shades of blue.
All of the furniture is currently white and I want the walls to be fresh and neutral too, so these will also be painted white with one feature wallpaper wall. In order to bring a little fun to the scheme, I decided to add a few splashes of bright orange and lime green here and there too.
I ordered a couple of wallpaper samples that fit the theme and the colours I plan on using and let J choose his favourite. Of course, he wants the full on dinosaur wallpaper pictured below!
Furniture
Luckily, when we first moved in we bought new furniture for J, so this will help to keep the cost of his big boy’s bedroom makeover down. The only new piece of furniture we really need is a bed.
I was quite convinced that the Ikea Hemnes day bed would be a great and practical purchase. But J has other ideas. Apparently he needs a bed with a ladder and absolutely no amount of coaxing or bribery will change his mind on this. Non negotiable apparently.
I hunted high and low find a bed with said ladder and found this one, which I think is pretty perfect. As he’s only 4, I didn’t want the ladder to be too high. We certainly don’t want any impromptu trips to A&E!
It seems like a good price and I love the storage underneath the bed too.
DIY
Of course I couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to for some cool dinosaur DIY projects!
I am going to try to make my own version of this amazing Dinosaur terrarium.

And perhaps a little makeover for this tired dressing up box. I’m thinking repainted white or grey with colourful dino foot prints.
I will also be designing some dinosaur themed prints for his walls, which I’ll be adding to my free printable library for my lovely townhouse VIP subscribers. Feel free to join the crew here.
The first tasks on our list are:
- Paint the walls, door and skirting boards.
- Measure the feature wall and order wallpaper.
- Put up the wall paper (new to wallpapering, so any tips would be greatly appreciated)
- Plan the new layout
So now you’re up to date with the plans, I’ll pop back with our boy’s bedroom makeover progress update in a few weeks time.
